FIRE DEPARTMENT AWARDS

*** 2010 Firefighter of the Year ***
Joseph Cable

Firefighter/Paramedic Joseph Cable
has earned the Temple Terrace Fire Department's
"Firefighter of the Year" award. The award recognizes Cable’s high level of performance as a firefighter and paramedic, along with his commitment to the community and his achievements in several department operations.

Since 2008, Cable has been the lead instructor for the fire department’s Risk Watch safety program, which teaches third-graders how to identify safety risks and protect themselves from serious injury. More than 200 youngsters have graduated from the program since its inception, and the department’s goal is to have every Temple Terrace third-grader go through the program each year.

“It takes a special person to keep a positive attitude and be a true motivator for an entire year,” said Assistant Fire Chief Ian Kemp in announcing the award.

“Firefighter Joe Cable is that person.”

Cable, 28, also was cited for work with the fire department’s mapping system, pinpointing fire hydrant and Knox Box locations throughout the City to help reduce response times and improve efficiency.

He also is a key member of the department’s CPR training staff.

Cable said he was surprised - and delighted - at being named Firefighter of the Year. “It’s very humbling, very unexpected,” he said. “At the same time, it’s exciting. I look at that plaque and hopefully represent what it stands for.” Cable joined the department in 2006. He and his wife, Bonny, live in Temple Terrace and have a 7-month-old son.
