Tropical Storm WATCH: Issued when conditions pose a threat to coastal areas generally within 36 hours.
Tropical Storm WARNING: Issued when a tropical storm or tropical storm conditions will affect a specific coastal area within 24 hours or less.
Hurricane WATCH: Issued when coastal lands are in danger of experiencing hurricane conditions within the next 36 hours.
Hurricane WARNING: Issued when coastal lands are in danger of experiencing sustained winds of at least 74 miles an hour within the next 24 hours.
Hurricane effects: A hurricane is not a point; its effects cover a large area. Don't focus on just the eye or the storm track. Take the following into consideration:
- Winds and rain extend a long distance from the center
- There will be storm surge and higher than normal tides
- There will be coastal flooding and beach erosion.
Wind and flood effects: If you live in a building (mobile or manufactured home), subject to wind damage or live in an area subject to flooding, you should have a plan and be ready to move to a safer location. If you live in a flood prone area or an exposed coastal area, you should evacuate to a shelter or higher ground.
Tropical Depression: Winds at a sustained speed of 38mph.
Tropical Storm: Sustained winds from 39mph to 73mph.
Gale force winds: sustained speed of 54mph
